What are Forged Pipe Fittings?

Threaded Forged Fittings, Socket Weld Forged Fittings

Forged pipe fittings (Socket Weld and Threaded) are manufactured in compliance with ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) B16.11, MSS SP-79\ 83\ 95\97 and BS3799 guidelines, and are utilized to connect nominal bore schedule pipes and pipelines.

What is the pressure rating for various types of forged fittings?

There are a number of forged fittings produced with different specifications, in size range of 1/8″ to 4″ (DN6-DN100). According to their applications, there are divided into two categories i.e. threaded fittings and socket-weld fittings.

  • Threaded Fittings: 2000, 3000 and 6000 lbs (140kgs/cm2-210kgs/cm2-410kgs/cm2) ( sch 40 – sch 80 – sch 160 ).
  • Socket Weld Fittings: 3000, 6000, 9000 lbs. ( sch 80 – sch 160 – xxs ).

What are the various Types of Forged Pipe Fittings?

Socket Weld Fittings Manufacturers in India

A Socket Weld Fittings Manufacturers in India is a pipe attachment detail in which a pipe is inserted into a recessed area of a Valve, fitting, or flange. In contrast to buttweld fittings, Socket Weld fittings are mainly used for small pipe diameters (Small Bore Piping); generally for piping whose nominal diameter is NPS 2 or smaller.
To join pipe to Valves and fittings or to other sections of pipe, fillet-type seal welds be used. Socket Welded Joints construction is a good choice wherever the benefits of high leakage integrity and great structural strength are important design considerations.
Fatigue resistance is lower than that in butt-welded construction due to the use of fillet welds and abrupt fitting geometry, but it is still better than that of most mechanical joining methods.
The purpose for the bottoming clearance in a Socket Weld is usually to reduce the residual stress at the root of the weld that could occur during solidification of the weld metal and to allow for differential expansion of the mating elements.

Socket Weld Fittings are family members of high pressure pipe fittings, which available in rating of Class 3000lb, 6000lb and 9000lb. They are used in areas where pipe-work is permanent and are designed to provide good flow characteristics. Usually in conjunction with ASME Pipe and are available in the same size range. We produced forged steel fittings in accordance with ASME B16.11. The B16.11 standard covers pressure-temperature ratings, dimensions, tolerances, marking, and material requirements for forged carbon and alloy stainless steel. The chemical and mechanical property requirements conform to ASTM A105, A182, or A350.

What is a Socket Weld Fitting?

Socket Weld fittings in India are defined in the ASME B16.11. As with socket weld, a pipe is inserted into a recessed area of the fitting. Both the pipe and the fitting are square cut, with no need for beveled end or preparation other than cleaning the outside, which allows easy welding and installation. Socket weld fittings are used for high-pressure piping applications. They are generally used in piping applications where the nominal pipe diameter is NPS 2” or smaller.

Few More Details About Socket Weld Fittings

Socket Weld Fittings are a family of high-pressure fittings that are used in various industrial processes.

  • They are used for lines conveying flammable, toxic or expensive material where no leakage can be permitted, and for steam 300 to 600 PSI.
  • They are used only in conjunction with ASME Pipe and are available in the same size range.
  • They are used in areas where pipe-work is permanent and are designed to provide good flow characteristics.
  • They are produced to several ASTM standards and are manufactured in accordance with ASME B16.11. The B16.11 standard covers pressure-temperature ratings, dimensions, tolerances, marking, and material requirements for forged carbon and alloy steel. Acceptable material forms are forgings, bars, seamless pipe, and seamless tubes which conform to the fittings chemical requirements, melting practices, and mechanical property requirements of ASTM A105, A182, or A350.
  • They are available in three pressure ratings: Class 3000, 6000, and 9000.

    Threaded Fittings Manufacturers in India

    What is a Threaded Fitting?

Threaded fittings in India are similar to socket weld fittings. The most important differentiating factor is that these types of fittings have threads for example threaded tees, threaded cross, threaded elbow, threaded bends, threaded unions, threaded couplings, threaded nipples, threaded caps, threaded plugs, threaded inserts, and threaded reducers.

Threaded joints probably represent the oldest method of joining piping systems. Like Socket Weld fittings, threaded fittings are mainly used for small pipe diameters (Small Bore Piping); generally for piping whose nominal diameter is NPS 2 or smaller. Threaded fittings or Screwed Fittings perform the same basic functions as butt-weld fittings. Screwed or threaded fittings are normally reserved for installations where the nominal pipe size is 3″ and smaller. Screwed or Threaded fittings are also available in cast iron, malleable iron, or forged steel.
The dimensional standards for taper pipe threads are given in ASME B1.20.1. That document gives all required dimensions including a number of threads per inch, pitch diameter, and normal engagement lengths for all pipe diameters-

  • Threaded piping is commonly used in low-cost, noncritical applications such as domestic water, fire protection, and industrial cooling water systems.
  • Threaded fittings are normally made of cast gray or malleable iron, cast brass or bronze, or forged alloy and carbon steel.
  • They are available in three pressure ratings: Class 2000, 3000 and 6000.
  • NPT Threaded Fitting

All Threaded fittings or Screwed Fittings are provided with NPT thread, ASME B1.20.1. The American National Pipe Thread Tapered is the best known and most widely used connection where the pipe thread provides both the mechanical joint and the hydraulic seal. NPT has a tapered male and female thread which seals with Teflon® tape or jointing compound.

    Threaded Fitting Advantages

  • Installation productivity is moderately high, and specialized installation skill requirements are not extensive.
  • Leakage integrity is good for low-pressure, low-temperature installations where vibration is not encountered.
  • Threaded Fitting Disadvantages

  • IRapid temperature changes may lead to leaks due to differential thermal expansion between the pipe and fittings.
  • Vibration can result in fatigue failures of screwed pipe joints due to the high stress intensification effects caused by the sharp notches at the base of the threads.
  • In hazardous piping systems threaded connections should be avoided, if possible. Their vulnerability to fatigue damage is significant, especially where exposed threads are subject to corrosion.
